About This Game

Dofense (pronounced Doo-fense) is a tower defense RTS game with strong core strategy and ability to design new levels with endless possibilities.

You defend six energy cores from pink monsters and destroy their spawning gate before they overwhelm your defense. The gameplay of Dofense involves trade-offs between four main resources – Space, Time, Crystals, Attention. The different kinds of towers, enemies and environment mechanics are designed to play unique roles in this framework. These elements are combined in a variety of ways to create interesting battles. The game comes with a number of built-in battles, organized in Sectors. Moreover it comes with a full-fledged Level editor that you can use to create your own maps.

The gameplay can be explained best along the four resource types mentioned above.

Space

Like any tower defense game your success depends on where you build the towers. It’s more fun to do on Hex grid. You can build creative mazes that push the enemy around. Depending on the terrain types and the NPC mechanics, some parts of the map are inhospitable to the enemy while others favour them. Lava puts them on fire, water douses the fire but it slows them down, Trains are running around just waiting to crush some pink mass. Moreover the enemy spawn gate lays out layers of thick creep that you have to shoot through before you can reach the gate. The terrain in Dofense is not a fixed thing either. Sometimes it has some weak rock, that the enemy can dig through. On other occasions, you can choose to destroy the terrain yourself using a Sky Drill. Well, and I almost forgot to mention the portal tubes…

Time

The energy required for tower operations is generated by six cores circulating in the Energy center. The longer they remain functional, more energy you will have. Dofense does not have definite number of enemy waves. The pink creatures keep growing in numbers with time and their spawning pattern is lightly randomized to create interesting gameplay each time. The length of the battle depends on how soon you choose to destroy the gate. Whether you focus on attacking the gate or defending the cores, plays big part in how long the battle lasts. This allows for lot of variation in gameplay.

Crystals

You achieve a number of crystals as you win battles. Crystals can be used to boost tower attributes. You can use this mechanism to increase base damage, reduce reload times, decrease construction and upgrade costs, and even improve rotation speeds (thus allowing faster aiming and tracking). You start each sector with a fixed number of crystals and with each battle success you gain additional crystals. Sometimes you may loose battles because you don’t have enough crystals. You can then fight other battles and come back again after you have won more crystals.

Attention

The core tower defense gameplay involves delegation of control. You build towers and they decide who to kill. This doesn’t guarantee that all the enemies will get killed as planned. One or two might just escape with last 1% of health remaining and that might cost you the battle. Some players may like to replay the whole battle to improve their tower layout. But some players might want a quick intervention. Just jump in and kill those enemies with your own hands. That’s what Executive actions are for.

You can choose to not spend crystals on towers and instead save them to be used on executive actions during the battle. If you see some lucky monsters escaping your maze, just shoot them with a Sniper gun. Or place a Black-hole at a bottleneck to make sure any survivors are swallowed whole. These micro management abilities are very effective, but they use your Attention, the final resource. You can get more hands on, with a special tower – Volta. It’s a very powerful tower that electrocutes everyone in its range, but it only fires manually.

Roadmap

• As of September 2021, the game is in public beta. You can request an access from the storefront. This beta build contains one sector that has 25 battles.
• By end of October 2021, the game should be ready for an Early Access release. At that point, it will have two sectors and a basic level editor.
• By end of 2021 or early next year, the full game should be ready to release. It will have Steam workshop integration for custom levels.
